Born and raised in California, Weill was the only child of the father of an accelerator physicist and the mother of an electrical engineer who divorced at the age of eight. Weir grew up reading classic science fiction, such as Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. At the age of 15, he began to work as a computer programmer at Sandy National Laboratory. He studied computer science at University of California at San Diego, though he did not graduate. He worked as a programmer at several software companies, including AOL, Palm, Mobile Iron and Blizzard, where he worked on video game Warcraft II: Dark Tide.

He started writing science fiction at the age of more than 20 and published his works on his website for many years. He also wrote a comic book called Casey and Andy, which included a fictional version of "Mad Scientist" by himself and his friends, such as author Jennifer Brozek, from 2001 to 2008. He also briefly introduced another comic book called Cheshire Crossing, which included Alice in Wonderland. Peterpan and Wizard of oz. Since he failed to publish his first novel, Pride Theft, and his writing career, these people later recognized his concern. His first notable work was The Egg, a short story that has been adapted into several YouTube videos and a play, the first concept of Everybody and the third album of American rapper Logic.
Will is best known for his first novel, the Martian. He wrote the book as scientifically and accurately as possible, including the study of orbital mechanics, the conditions of Mars planets, the history of manned space flight and botany. Initially, it was published as a free sequence on his website, and some readers asked him to post it on Amazon Kindle. The novel was sold for the first time at 99 cents and became the Kindle bestseller list. Then the literary agent was contacted with will and sold the right of the book to the crown publishing group. The print edition of the novel (slightly edited from the original edition) ranks 12th on the New York Times bestseller list. The Wall Street journal called the novel "the best pure science fiction in many years". It was a movie starring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastan, which was released in October 2, 2015.
Fan stories written by Weir and Lacero were published in the 2016 edition of Ready Player One, making it the norm of the book's fictional world. This work is the preface of the main novel.
In 2015, Will announced that he was working on his second novel, tentatively named Zhek, which he called "a more traditional science fiction novel, including aliens, telepathy, faster travel than light, and so on".
He later said that the project was "counterattacked" and transferred to another science fiction novel called Artemis, in which a leading lady, based on the moon, was scheduled for the 1980s to 1990s. This recent future thriller tells of a woman named Jazz, whose small town is also restricted by her twenties, the only city on the moon. Because of the debt to be paid and wages that barely include rent, she can't refuse to let her life-changing opportunities fall to her lap. But she later found herself in a conspiracy to control the city itself. On September 26, 2017, it was announced that Lord Phil and Christopher Miller were hired to develop and direct the science fiction film Artemis on the basis of the novel.
In 2016, Weir published the "uncertainty principle set" of short stories on the TAPAS application platform.
